Three types of app, and when each one fits

The first decision in app development is not the design but the type of app. It determines where users will find it, which device capabilities it can use, and what development and maintenance will cost.

Web app and PWA

An app that runs in the browser on any device, with no store download. A PWA is a web app that can be added to the home screen, send notifications and keep working on a weak connection. One codebase, and updates reach users immediately without waiting for store approval.

Fits especially for:

  • Internal tools for your team and field staff
  • Testing a new idea quickly on a measured budget

Less suited when:

  • Store presence is part of the product

Cross-platform app

A single codebase that produces an iPhone app and an Android app, with technologies such as React Native or Flutter. The app appears in the stores, sends notifications and uses most device capabilities, at a lower development and maintenance cost than two separate apps.

Fits especially for:

  • Loyalty clubs, ordering and appointments
  • A service app for existing customers
  • Most business apps that need a store presence

Less suited when:

  • It is a game or relies on heavy graphics
  • The whole value of the product rests on unique device hardware

Native app

Separate code for each operating system, in Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. It is the way to get maximum performance and full access to device capabilities such as Bluetooth, sensors, augmented reality and background work. The price is two codebases to develop and maintain.

Fits especially for:

  • A product whose core is hardware or performance
  • Connecting to external devices
  • An experience that needs the newest operating system capabilities

Why start with an MVP

An MVP is the smallest version of the app that still solves the users' core problem. Instead of spending the whole budget on a long feature list, you launch the core, see how real users work with it, and decide what comes next based on data rather than guesses.
